Ive cracked more passwords with incremental mode than with wordlists tbh. For me I like to install it from the official repository of Black Arch. Depends on how Strong is the password you're trying to crack, when im doing pentests i try wordlists, and then the the incremental mode if the wordlist dont have the password. If you want to install John The Ripper manually than you can do that by downloading the program from OpenWall website. But its so time consuming that for a password complex enough, it may never be able to complete in practical course of time.
